Plenary Session - Risk: perception and reality

Conflict-affected states are often unable to mobilise resources, both domestic and foreign. In part, this stems from international perceptions of risk. In some cases, the global business community has outdated knowledge and may be missing opportunities due to presumptions of unresolved conflict. This panel will look at the divergence between reality and perception in some of Africa’s conflict-affected states.

  • How does risk perception affect financing? What tools can help businesses who may be struggling to raise investment due to inaccurate risk perception?
  • What can governments do to convey an accurate picture of business risk in a country, and what information sources should businesses look to for credible risk insight?
  • What can companies do to manage social conflict in and around their investments, and what is best practice in terms of communicating to the public what businesses are doing?
